Interview with Paul Mcguire from Cerebral Bore

"I would define Cerebral Bore as the hardest working underground band in the world. At least, that’s what we are trying to be. Remember us for that at least!"
                                                                                                           -Paul Mcguire

Well i guess i don't have to say much about "Cerebral Bore". Formed in 2006 the band is from Glasgow, Scotland Formed by Paul and Allan and they are the only the 2 founding members in the band now. We had an exclusive talk with Paul. Just a few days back CEREBRAL BORE played at Neurotic Death fest in Tilburg. While talking with Paul my respect for him just grew .
To know much about the band Cerebral Bore you can follow them in the following sites...

Greetings Paul!! Before we begin we will like to know how things are going back there in Scotland.
Things in Scotland are quite OK. Boring as always, which is my main inspiration to go and tour. So it is reliably the same right now.

Formed in 2006 in Glasgow how has Cerebral Bore's Journey been?
Well, long and tough to say the least, but also with a very chartable progress. The more we toured, the more we learned. But we realized soon that we would need a good record label behind us to fulfill what our ambitions had become, so we signed a deal with Earache records in 2010
Since then nothing has become any easier, just a little more focused with a better idea of the things we want to aim to achieve.

Talking about the bands Name "Cerebral Bore" what does it really mean?
It means to drill into a head, or something. It is from a video game called Turok, it wasn’t my choice, but i am forever stuck with it.

Trust me bruh name doesn’t matter it’s that impact of your music that has ripped us all. Coming to the initial days the band was formed in 2006 Until July 2010 you did vocals before Som joined the band. Am i correct about that?
That is bang wrong. I have never done vocals for the band, although i may try one day.

We wish for that. Actually i was a bit confused cause as far as i know the band didn’t have a fixed lineup until them. Paul tell us how would you define Cerebral bore?
Yes we did, but we went through a few vocalists looking for the right one. I would define Cerebral Bore as the hardest working underground band in the world. At least, that’s what we are trying to be. Remember us for that at least!

That’s for sure. Personally we were shocked when we heard that Som and Kyle left the band and for time being felt that the band was about to end. Since you and Allan are the only founding members how hard was it to work with new members as it is almost like starting from the scratch..
Well Kyle was asked to leave and Som left on her own as i am sure you know. It is always hard to fill a member slot, and it’s something i didn't start doing for quite a while as it’s a very stressful and demanding process with a lot of chance of risks involved. But it’s not like starting from scratch, i still remember those days, and even if we replaced those members with a carrot and a washing machine, it still wouldn’t be as much of a struggle as the early days.

Paul talking about early days tell us how your journey in metal music began?
Just the usual story, By the time i was 10 i already listened to metal like Pantera, White Zombie, Slayer etc, At the same time i had Cannibal Corpse and some tapes of Deicide , but i didn’t really take a strong interest in death metal for another few years.
The first album i bought on vinyl was eaten back to life by Cannibal Corpse, and my first CD purchase was Iron maidens Number of the beast.

Paul can you tell us what are you listening nowadays (Any genre)
These days i am mostly listening to death metal, to keep my self in the writing frame of mind for cerebral bore. But in actual fact, i don’t get a lot of time to listen to music in general.

Coming back to the band .Being a young band you've toured quite often. Formed in early 2006, you guys released your 1st demo THE DEAD FLESH ARCHITECT. Did your 1st tour beyond U.K in Aug 2007. How was the reaction of the crowds back there in US and as well as that i how was your reaction.
We were hit with our first ever real problems as a band, when our vocalist left the band a few weeks before the first trip to the USA, so we were more focused on not sounding like total crap with a stand in vocalist, rather than looking really awesome. But we made a lot of friends on that first trip outside the UK, whom we still hold as close friends now 7 years on. The tour was riddled with problems like cancelled or un-booked shows, but it taught us more than we have probably ever learned from any other single experience, and made me realize that if we could over come this, we could still be in with a chance of full filling our ambitions... But there were also amazing things that came from that "tour", like my friend Anthony calling my bluff, and bringing his buddy, and a hero of mine, Pete Steele (Type O Negative/Carnivore) along to the show to hang out, and getting to visit the US office of our future label, Earache Records. So there were silver linings that stand out way more in my memory than any of the negatives.

Can you tell us which band influences Cerebral Bore’s music?
It’s hard to say which bands consistently have influenced us, but bands like Cannibal Corpse, Spawn of Possession, and Decapitated were the big ones for me, probably a little dying fetus and another big one was the UK band Gorerotted.
And even a little before that, the Scottish band Regorge. My interest in that band led to my interest in the band Gorerotted, whom i would say i listened to as much as anything else at the time of writing our first songs

You guys have a quite healthy metal scene back there in the United Kingdom. I want to ask you there is a misconceptions regarding how band works when it comes to money. Is it still a struggle to devote enough time to music and as well as to manage to keep your jobs?
Yes absolutely, depending on how the band is set up and who pays for what expenses. When it comes to Cerebral Bore, i take most of the financial burden if there is any kind of loss to be made, its not that i can afford to do this, but i realized the strain that finances can cause on a band who are dealing with so much money turning over in their name. I work within the industry mostly, so it suits exactly what i need to do on the business side of Cerebral Bore and without it, I would never have learned the things i have learned that has made a possibility for me.

So if i am not wrong you are also in the management team of this year’s Summer Slaughter Tour?
Yes, I am managing a tour for the band decrepit birth, and i am also the stage manager for Dying Fetus.

I was not sure about it found out about it while going through your page. Talking about the summer Slaughter tour 2012(July 20 -Aug 25) Cerebral Bore also played that time how was the experience.
The experience was amazing. Getting to play summer slaughter at any point would be amazing, but doing it the same year as Cannibal Corpse was life changing. It was the most demanding tour we have done, and the same applies to any band doing that tour, with the sheer amount of bands and people sharing the same space every day. But it was amazing for sure, and something i would do a million times over if i had the chance

For sure man we will love to see you guys again on road. As far as my knowledge you guys Played in Hammer fest back in 2012 played in Neurotic Death fest in Tilburg and many more such phenomenal gigs and tours. Any new tour updates of Cerebral Bore?
We just played Neurotic Death fest last weekend for the 4th time since 2010, which was the last date of our European tour with Despised Icon. We have a US tour coming up in September, as well as some more European shows around the same time. But right now we are also working on South American and an Asian tour for early 2015

We will love to to hear that Cerebral Bore Tours get fixed for Nepal as well in upcoming days. Talking about the bands release, 1 full length 1 E.P and 2 demos/single has been released. Can we expect the next release soon?
Yes we have a new album written and ready to record hopefully in the next month. Then we will have some new music videos and stuff to check out/ hopefully we can make it to Nepal, we are definitely available and willing to travel there. We were booked in Darjeeling, India in 2011 so it’s not impossible.

Yep i am aware of the Darjeeling shows cancellation there were some problems that time which we all are aware of. Coming to the album Paul can you say us something about the New Upcoming album?
There isn’t a lot i can tell right now, other than that we have booked some studio time with Chris Fielding who produced our last album. The album will be out at some point this year on Earache Records.

For sure Chris Fielding is on e good producer and we are familiar with his work from your last album. Coming to your genre, BRUTAL DEATH Metal, it has always been associated with misogyny due to the lyrics the imaginary and of course songs title and the lyrics are considered way too vulgar.
A perfect example
Kill your mother /Rape your dog
Killing by penetration
..........................................................
....................................................
Let me be your sperm factory.
Fisted Cripples... An old Cerebral Bore song title from the first EP
The act of putting a clenched fist up the rectum of a disabled person

Like i wanted to know your song writing process?
Last time the songs came more out of jamming and coming up with little pieces at a time, but this time round has been more based on myself writing the songs alone. We have busy personal lives, and this way has kind of worked out to be the most productive so far

So Paul we are almost at the end now we will like you to share anything to the upcoming bands and as well as Cerebral Bore fans out here in Nepal as well as to our readers?
We promise to deliver some new tunes really soon, and we appreciate all the support that we have been shown up until now and going forward. It really still means as much to us as the day we started, and our touring record will come to the surface again once we have the new album ready to go. And to the upcoming bands, i hope we can share a stage together some day, it will always be a pleasure!

I still want to carry on but must end now. Lastly a space for you to ask if we SNRMB team forgot to ask? Please feel free to ask.
I don’t think so man; i think you covered everything essential.

Thank you Paul, for your time .
My pleasure man
