Hi! It's
all good here. A lot of positive things are in the air right now, so I'm pretty
content right now.
So before we come to TORTURE
DIVISION we will like to talk a bit about VOMITORY, how was the Japan tour and
the last gig in 29th Dec 2013. Seriously that day is now considered as the dark
day in the global death metal history.
The Japan tour was
awesome but tough. It was great to finally see one of the countries that I have dream't of visiting, and even more great to meet our Japanese fans! They are
incredible! The tough part was the travel schedule. It was not very good
planned, but we knew it was going to be tough so whining about it while we were
there wouldn't have made it better either. So we enjoyed it the best we could
instead. We're very happy we did it, and I would love to go back to Japan one day -
both as a tourist and play with a band. The other bands on the tour were great
too, only nice people! The farewell show with Vomitory was nothing but a big
success. I am so happy and proud of how it all turned out! The atmosphere was
fucking magical, the crowd was amazing and we did a hell of a show! It wasn't
as emotional as I feared it would be. I felt only pride and a sense of victory!
It was the best possible way to end Vomitory! The supporting bands God Macabre
(in which I also play drums) and General Surgery were fucking killer too and
added to the old-school vibe of this special evening.
I had gone through the videos in YouTube that you and Ronnie passed me while we had a talk after the band got dismantled.
It sure was memorizing seeing almost every x members and fellow bands members
playing together and even Johan Hegg from Amon Amorth gave vocals in one song. Seriously
man at one point i felt could have witnessed you guys on your last gig..
It sure
was. Thomas Bergqvist (bass 1992-1996) joined us on stage to play
"Perdition", Ronnie Olson (vocals 1989-1996) joined us on "Raped
In Their Own Blood", Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth joined us on
"Serpents", LG Petrov of Entombed joined us on
"Retaliation" and Tomas Lindberg joined us on "Revelation
Nausea". So it was quite a nice bunch of guests we had with us on that
show all of them who has been involved with or inspired the band through the
years. Those performances are pure pieces of gold that I will carry with me for
the rest of my life.
For sure the name of VOMITORY will
always be mentioned in golden letters in the Death metal history. Now leaving
aside Vomitory and coming to Torture Division, the world finest death metal.. Can
you tell us something about the band?
Torture
Division was started in 2007 by me and K Philipson. We recruited Jörgen
Sandström over the phone. Jörgen and K go way back so it didn't take too much
work to get him on board. We made the decision in the beginning to release
demos first, before we made an album, and make it available for free download
from our website. We were actually offered a record deal before we even had one
single note recorded. But we wanted to do it like in the old days; release
demos first and slowly build the band. But soon we decided to continue
releasing demo trilogies and not releasing albums. All three of us are pretty
fed up with working with record labels in the traditional way so we decided to
go our own way. And apparently it works just fine. Every single song we have
recorded is available for free from our website. Still, so far three demo
trilogies have been released as CD's too. All demos, except the first one, are
mixed and mastered by no less than Dan Swanö of Unisound, which grants a top
notch production.
Recently tortured division played a
gig can you tell us how was it?
It was
nice indeed! We played at Metal Clüb in Karlstad
which is the place where all metal events in my area are. Our brothers F.K.Ü.
also played that night. Good crowd and a great party! What more can one asks
for?!
Exactly. As we all know that Death
Metals history is now above 60 years and while I was going through your bands
disco got these "With over 60 years (and counting) of combined death metal
experience you understand that we know what we do, we love what we do and that
we will keep on doing it until the end of days. Or at least for as many years
as we find the inspiration for it. Which quite possibly might be when the end
of days arrive. So, in short… Torture Division is the world’s best death
metal". Can you explain us about it..
By now we
have 75 years of combined death metal experience in the band haha. And I guess
one can hear it too. We know what we do and we know how we want it. The
"the world's best death metal" should of course be taken with a grain
of salt, even though we think that what we do is great. It's fun to see how
some people take that quote so dead serious and starts to argue about it haha.
People in general need a lot more self-distance!
Tobias "I wanna beat somebody,
Flesh before my eyes, Satan, Sprit och Våld " are some of my favorite .
Satan, Sprit och Våld didnt get what it meant but it my personal favorite. Can
you say us what does it mean?
Satan,
Booze and Violence.
Ah Satan, Booze and Violence. So any
new updates from torture division?
Yes, J
just finished the bass tracks for the third demo of the last trilogy, and very
soon he will record the vocals for it too. Then it's off to Dan Swanö and his
magic fingers. Part from that, we are looking for shows to fill 2014 with.
So Tobias coming beyond Torture
division tell us what are you listening nowadays?
I listen too
much of the same I've always listened to, the classics you know. Iron Maiden,
Motörhead, Saxon, Deep Purple, Slayer, Black Sabbath... I also listen a lot to
more progressive stuff lately, like Porcupine Tree, The Flower Kings, Spocks
Beard for example. I also just recently discovered the Norwegian band Sahg,
which I fuckin love!
Cool.
Since we have talked about
almost everything in the previous interview of yours (with Vomitory) we would
like to know which bands influence torture division 's music?
As
already mentioned, we have 75 years of combined death metal experience so there
are a few influences that we have picked up along the way haha. Jörgen even
defined Swedish death metal as we know it today with Grave back in the day. The
early Swedish death metal scene, old Slayer, Napalm Death, Vader, Terrorizer
are some of the many influences.
So lastly a space for you to ask us
SNRMB crew that we didn’t mentioned?
Support
death metal and Torture Division. Buy a shirt from us since we are so fuckin
nice and give you the worlds' best death metal for free! Available designs and
sizes are on our website, www.torturedivision.net.
Cheers!
